I have an existing powerpoint presentation with a lot of animations and a lot of slides. The animations do not come across to Impress. Basically, my slides are bulleted lists, with each bullet item appearing with a separate mouse click. I was hoping to be able to create a master slide where the animations were already set up for bulleted lists.

If I want to build in broad compatibility I will often export graphics and convert them to png (GIMP editor). GIMP is also an effective way to add soft drop shadows to images (something Impress lacks.). As a png image is self contained it's not reliant on how PowerPoint or other viewers might try to display a graphic element.

You can display and snap to a grid in Impress (LibreOffice) to arrange the images. If a presentation is mostly images, I would recommend Impress/PowerPoint.
