There is more to the quality of a DAC than just the chip. Power supply, for one. So the answer to your question is a bit more complicated. @tparr I have an experience similar to yours I own an older Onkyo CDP that uses the Wolfson 8742 chip and a new Benchmark DAC3B that uses the ESS 9028PRO and I find the Benchmark presets more detail.

The Philips unit has its share of bruises and scratches. The Pioneer with a Burr Brown 24 bit DAC by comparison has more an "analog" sound, more sedate and "warmer".
